Q-Free is a leading global supplier of solutions and products for Road User Charging and Traffic Surveillance having applications mainly within electronic toll collection for road financing, congestion charging, truck-tolling, law enforcement and parking/access control. Q-Free offers solutions and products based on state of the art technology, and is the leading supplier within DSRC (tag) - and OCR (image processing) based solutions, with deliveries in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and North- and South America.
Q-Free's focus is on Road User Charging (RUC). Within the RUC market, Q-Free focuses on providing communication and transaction technology and products to safeguard a transport operator's cash flow. Q-Free aims at becoming market leader in all markets it enters. Q-Free sees a strong motivation to develop concepts and products that give clear incentives to travellers to choose transport means that optimise the balance between infrastructure utilization and environmental effects. One such product is a smart card enabled OBU, a so called "two piece tag", whereby the traveller can use a smart card, i.e. a public transport card, to activate his on board unit to pay for road tolling and parking. Q-Free launched this product in 2005

Historically, payment of road tolls meant stopping the vehicle and handing over money to an operator before being allowed to proceed.

The evolution of ETC made it possible to speed up the process of toll payment. Q-Free has played a decisive role in taking the development another step further with the introduction of the Free Flow (MLFF) system, where vehicles are tolled without the need to pass through specific toll plazas or lanes, or reduce their speed.

Q-Free's customers include transport system operator with business models that depend on the successful processing of huge amounts of micro transactions. Consequently, system availability and reliability are critical and it's no coincidence that these are among Q-Free's strongest competitive advantages.
